50,000feet is proud to announce the Rodney Smith Estate’s webinar, “What Makes Fashion Photography Art,” featuring the life and work of Smith (1947–2016). Smith had a thirty-year collaboration with 50,000feet Senior Advisor, Leslie Smolan, both as her creative partner and husband.

The webinar will occur from 5–6 p.m. CT on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, with Paul Martineau, Curator of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum, hosting the panel discussion.

Martineau is one of the world’s foremost advocates in acknowledging the importance and impact of fashion photography. Joining Martineau, panelists include Etheleen Staley, Founder of the Staley Wise Gallery; Viktoria Vamosi, International Model; and Dennis Freedman, Founding Creative Director of W Magazine. The webinar will focus on what makes Smith’s images transcend their original commission.

The discussion coincides with the Getty Museum’s acquisition of ten Rodney Smith prints for their permanent collection. This year, Smith’s work forms the centerpiece of Hermes’ holiday campaign.

Smith developed a unique photographic vision that is ordered, witty and beautifully surreal. Following his studies at Yale, Smith worked with Walker Evans, honing his recognizable art in what Jessica Stewart summarizes in My Modern Met as “the four factors which became driving forces behind his work—composition, scale, proportion and relation.” His distinctive photographic vision coupled with his exacting technical precision allowed Smith to blur the line between fine art and fashion photography.
