Design is an integral tool that connects communities and creates equity, which is why a free and accessible Museum focused on design is vital to the cultural well being of Chicago residents and visitors.

With a mission to inspire, educate and innovate through design, the Design Museum of Chicago has had a momentous 2019, hosting nearly 20,000 visitors and producing 11 events that were mostly free—from panel discussions and opening receptions to educational programming and film screenings.

The year began with Keep Moving: Designing Chicago’s Bicycle Culture, a broad survey of how bicycle design in Chicago contributed to the early popularity of bicycles in America, their survival through the 20th century and their resurgence today. Next up were the All-City CPS Visual Arts Exhibitions, which invited elementary and high school art teachers from every Chicago school to submit work for selection by a jury of teachers and Museum staff. And currently on display is Setting the Stage: Objects of Chicago Theatre, featuring nearly 60 objects that emphasize the diversity, depth and breadth of theatres in the city and exploring how entire worlds are translated by designers into large-scale productions.

Additionally, their recent partnership with One For One and the Chicago Loop Alliance represented a powerful display of community engagement. The Museum connected with kids from violent neighborhoods through a workshop to create more than 100 banners that hung proudly along a stretch of Chicago’s State Street this past September.

Activating not only spaces but also hearts and minds in new ways, the Museum continues to reaffirm the power of design in impacting how we see the world and the quality of our lives within it. In 2020, expect more of everything we love about the Design Museum of Chicago. More Great Ideas, more immersive programming for Chicago youth and more bold explorations into new creative territory with an exhibition highlighting the intersections of music and design. And with the launch of the Design Impact Grant Program in collaboration with the City of Chicago, NeoCon and theMART, the Design Museum continues their support of the principles, projects and people making Chicago better—one design at a time.

As a proud founding partner, 50k invites you to support the work of the Museum and their entire team. Donations made before December 31 will be matched dollar-for-dollar (up to $10,000) by 50k. Please join us in celebrating the beauty and ubiquity of design, and give now.
